Discover Morocco's Blue Pearl and the Golden Dunes of the Sahara

A 10-day private journey that takes you from the blue-washed streets of Chefchaouen deep into the imperial cities of Fes and Meknes, across the dramatic Atlas Mountains, and finally into the silence of the Sahara Desert. Every stop on this route was chosen because it offers something real — a medina that has not changed in centuries, a gorge that stops you in your tracks, a night under stars so bright they feel close enough to touch.

What Makes This Tour Different

This is not a tour that ticks boxes. It is built around real time — two full days in Chefchaouen so you can breathe, a dedicated full day inside the Fes medina with a certified local guide, and an overnight in a desert camp where the only sound is wind over sand. Because it is a private tour, the pace bends to you. Want to linger longer in a souk? Done. Want to skip the optional morning activity and sleep in? Also done.

Your driver speaks English and knows every back road between Casablanca and Marrakech. Your local guides in Fes and Marrakech are licensed specialists — not freelancers picked up at the hotel lobby. And your desert camp is not a tent city; it is a small, private setup with hot showers and proper food.

Who This Tour Is For

Couples, small groups, and families with older children who want more than a highlight reel. Photographers who need golden-hour time in places like the Todra Gorge and the Dades Valley. History lovers who want context, not just captions. And anyone who has looked at a map of Morocco and thought: I want to actually understand this country, not just pass through it.

Private & Flexible: This tour runs on your schedule. Departure dates are open. The itinerary can be reshuffled or extended on request. Contact us to build the exact version that fits your trip.

What You Will Experience

The Blue Streets of Chefchaouen

Two full days in Morocco's most photographed town. Walk the Plaza Uta el-Hammam at dawn before the crowds arrive, climb up to the Spanish Mosque for a panoramic view of the Rif Mountains at sunset, and spend an afternoon in the Kasbah Museum where the history of this small city — founded in 1471 — is told through ceramics, textiles, and carved wood. The blue paint is not a gimmick; it is a tradition that stretches back generations, and spending real time here lets you feel why.

A Full Day Inside Fes el-Bali

Fes el-Bali is the oldest medina in the world and one of the most disorienting. That is exactly why you get a full day here with a certified local guide — someone who has walked these 9,000 streets for years. You will see the Bou Inania Madrasa, stand above the Chouara tanneries (with mint in hand), visit the Al-Qarawiyyin mosque founded in 859 AD, and get lost — intentionally — in the souk district where spice merchants and leather workers have operated for centuries.

Roman Ruins at Volubilis

A UNESCO World Heritage site that most people rush through in 45 minutes. You will not. Volubilis was the capital of Roman Mauritania and the mosaics here — Orpheus, the Four Seasons, the Bacchus suite — are among the finest surviving examples in North Africa. Your guide will explain what daily life looked like in this city 2,000 years ago, and you will have time to walk the full site at a pace that lets you actually absorb it.

Sunset Camel Trek into the Sahara

Late afternoon in Merzouga. You mount a camel and ride into Erg Chebbi — dunes that rise up to 180 metres. The light turns gold, then orange, then deep red. You arrive at camp just as the sun disappears behind the sand. That evening: dinner cooked over an open fire, Berber music played live around the flames, and then silence. Real silence. The kind that only exists in the desert, far from any road or town.

Ait Benhaddou — Where Films Were Made

This UNESCO-listed kasbah is not just a film set — it is a living village where families still live and work. But yes, Game of Thrones filmed the city of Yunkai here. So did Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, and The Mummy. Walk through the mud-brick alleyways, climb to the top for a view over the Draa Valley, and understand why directors keep coming back to this exact spot.

Todra Gorge and the Dades Valley

Two of the most dramatic landscapes in all of Morocco, and they are an hour apart. Todra is a narrow canyon with walls that rise 300 metres straight up — walk into it in the late morning when sunlight hits the rock face and it glows orange. Then drive through the Dades Valley and its twisted, finger-like rock formations. The whole route is known as the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, and every bend reveals another one.

Marrakech — The Final Chapter

A full day to explore the city that closes the loop. Bahia Palace and its painted ceilings. The Saadian Tombs, hidden for centuries. The Majorelle Garden with its cobalt blue walls. And then, as evening falls, Jemaa el-Fnaa — the square where storytellers, musicians, and food stalls turn the night into something electric. Sit on a rooftop with a glass of mint tea and watch it all unfold below.

The Program of Morocco's Blue Pearl and the Golden Dunes of the Sahara

Arrive at Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport where your private driver will be waiting. After a visit to the Hassan II Mosque, head north through the countryside toward the Rif Mountains and arrive in Chefchaouen in the late afternoon.

Today's Highlights:

Hassan II Mosque: The third largest mosque in the world with a 210m minaret overlooking the Atlantic

Transfer to Chefchaouen: 5-hour scenic drive through the Moroccan countryside to the Rif Mountains

Riad Check-in: Traditional riad accommodation in the heart of the Chefchaouen medina

Spend the evening exploring the nearby Plaza Uta el-Hammam and enjoy your first Moroccan dinner in the medina.

📍 Travel Tip: Hassan II Mosque guided tours run most days except Fridays and religious holidays. We schedule your visit around this.

Spend the full day discovering Chefchaouen, Morocco's most photogenic town. Start early — the medina is quietest before 9 AM and the blue walls catch the morning light perfectly.

Today's Highlights:

Plaza Uta el-Hammam: The main square with cafes and the Grand Mosque

Kasbah Museum: Former 18th-century fortress with gardens and panoramic city views

Ras El Maa Waterfall: A popular local spot where the stream runs through the medina

Spanish Mosque: Hike up for the best panoramic sunset view of Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen Souks: Browse handwoven blankets, leather goods, and local goat cheese

The afternoon is free for shopping and wandering the narrow blue alleyways at your own pace.

📸 Photography Tip: The best light for photos is early morning or late afternoon when the sun creates beautiful contrasts with the blue walls.

Leave Chefchaouen and head southeast through the heart of Morocco. This day combines two of the country's most important historical stops — Volubilis and Meknes — before arriving in Fes.

Today's Highlights:

Volubilis Roman Ruins: UNESCO site with ancient mosaics — the finest Roman archaeological site in Morocco

Bab Mansour Gate: The largest and most impressive gate in all of Morocco, in Meknes

Moulay Ismail Mausoleum: The ornate tomb of the sultan who built imperial Meknes

Arrival in Fes: Check into your riad in the ancient medina

Lunch is in Meknes before continuing to Fes. Arrive in the evening and settle into your riad.

📍 Travel Tip: Volubilis is best visited in the late morning when the light hits the mosaics perfectly. Plan about one hour here.

A dedicated full day inside Fes el-Bali — the oldest medina in the world — with a certified local guide. Fes has 9,000 streets and no cars. A guide is not optional here; it is how you actually experience the city.

Today's Highlights:

Bou Inania Madrasa: A 14th-century Islamic school with extraordinary tilework and a working clock tower

Chouara Tanneries: The famous leather workshops viewed from above — a defining Fes experience

Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque: The oldest university in the world, founded in 859 AD

Nejjarine Museum: A stunning caravanserai turned woodworking museum

Fes Souks: Navigate the spice, leather, and ceramic markets with your guide

End the day at a hilltop viewpoint overlooking the entire city at sunset — one of the best views in Morocco.

📍 Travel Tip: Your guide will hand you a sprig of mint before the tanneries. The smell is strong — the mint helps.

A scenic drive south from Fes toward the Sahara. The landscape changes completely every hour — from green mountain valleys to ancient forests to desert dunes.

Today's Highlights:

Ifrane: A mountain town with Swiss-style chalets and the famous stone lion statue

Cedar Forest of Azrou: Ancient cedar trees where Barbary macaque monkeys live freely

Ziz Gorge & Valley: A narrow canyon opening into thousands of date palms — one of Morocco's most photographed views

Merzouga: Your hotel sits on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, the tallest in Morocco

Arrive in Merzouga in the late afternoon with the dunes stretching out in front of you.

📍 Travel Tip: The Ziz Valley is best seen from the road just after the gorge. Stop and take photos — it is one of the highlights of the entire drive.

The morning is free to explore Merzouga — visit a local Berber village or take a walk on the dunes before the heat arrives. The real experience begins in the late afternoon.

Today's Highlights:

Sunset Camel Trek: Ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes as the sun drops — dunes rise up to 180 metres

Private Desert Camp: A small luxury camp with hot shower and traditional bedding

Sahara Dinner: Tagine and couscous cooked over an open fire under the stars

Berber Music & Stargazing: Live drums around the campfire, then complete silence and the Milky Way overhead

One of the most memorable nights of the entire tour. The desert at night is completely silent — no traffic, no light pollution.

🌙 Night Tip: Desert nights are cold — temperatures drop below 10°C. The camp provides blankets, but bring a warm layer.

Wake before dawn to watch the Sahara sunrise — one of the most magical moments of the trip. Then head west along the Route of a Thousand Kasbahs toward two of Morocco's most dramatic gorges.

Today's Highlights:

Sahara Sunrise: The dunes shift from black to purple to gold — ride a camel back to Merzouga

Erfoud Fossil Workshop: See how craftsmen turn ancient marine fossils into polished stone

Todra Gorge: A narrow canyon with walls rising 300 metres — the rock glows orange where the sun hits

Dades Valley: Famous twisted rock formations and the winding road photographers love

Your hotel tonight sits high in the Dades Valley with panoramic mountain views.

📸 Photography Tip: Visit Todra Gorge around midday when sunlight enters the canyon and the rock walls glow their brightest.

A big day — from the desert south through the High Atlas Mountains and down into Marrakech. The highlight is Ait Benhaddou, one of the most photographed kasbahs in the world.

Today's Highlights:

Atlas Film Studios: Movie sets from Gladiator and The Mummy still standing in Ouarzazate

Ait Benhaddou: UNESCO kasbah where Game of Thrones filmed — climb to the citadel for stunning views

Tizi n'Tichka Pass: Cross the High Atlas at 2,260 metres — Morocco's highest major road

Arrival in Marrakech: Check into your riad in the medina as the sun sets

The drive over the Atlas Mountains is dramatic and winding. Stop at the viewpoints — on clear days you can see snow-capped peaks.

📍 Travel Tip: Ait Benhaddou is a living village — families still live here. Be respectful when photographing and ask permission.

A full day to explore Marrakech with a certified local guide. The Red City moves fast and the medina is dense — your guide makes the difference between an exhausting maze and a great day.

Today's Highlights:

Bahia Palace: Stunning painted ceilings and tiled courtyards from the 19th century

Saadian Tombs: 16th-century royal tombs sealed for centuries, rediscovered in 1917

Ben Youssef Madrasa: One of the finest examples of Moroccan Islamic architecture

Majorelle Garden: A botanical garden with a famous cobalt blue villa, once owned by Yves Saint Laurent

Jemaa el-Fnaa: The legendary square that comes alive at sunset with storytellers, musicians, and food

End the evening at a rooftop restaurant overlooking Jemaa el-Fnaa. It is one of the best evenings anywhere in the world.

🍽️ Food Tip: The food stalls in Jemaa el-Fnaa open after sunset. Try the snail soup — it is a Marrakech tradition.

Your last morning in Morocco. Breakfast at the riad, then use whatever time you have for a final walk through the souks or a last mint tea at a rooftop cafe.

Today's Highlights:

Final Morning in Marrakech: A relaxed last breakfast and a walk through the medina

Airport Transfer: Private drop-off at Marrakech Menara Airport — about 15 minutes from the medina

Your driver will pick you up with plenty of time before your flight. Safe travels.

✈️ Flight Tip: If possible, book a departure flight after 12:00 PM so you can enjoy a relaxed final morning.

Please Read Before Booking

This tour covers a wide range of terrain — narrow medina streets, uneven desert sand, mountain passes, and gorge walkways. It is designed to be comfortable, but it is not designed to be effortless. Here is an honest list of who might struggle:

Travelers with limited mobility The Fes and Chefchaouen medinas involve a lot of walking on cobblestone and uneven surfaces. Stairs are common. Wheelchairs cannot navigate these areas. If you have a mobility condition, contact us — we can adjust the itinerary, but we want to be upfront that some sites will not be accessible.

Very young children (under 5)
Some driving days are long — up to six hours with stops. The desert nights are cold (temperatures can drop below 10°C). This is not a tour that moves slowly, and young children may find the pace exhausting.

Travelers with serious health conditions
Parts of southern Morocco — especially the desert — are far from hospitals. If you require regular medical attention or carry emergency medication, please discuss this with us before booking.

Anyone who cannot tolerate heat
In summer (June–August), temperatures in Merzouga and Ouarzazate regularly exceed 40°C. If heat is a serious concern, we strongly recommend traveling between October and April.

Travelers with very strict dietary needs
We can handle vegetarian, vegan, and halal requests. But in rural areas and small towns, options become limited. If you have a rare allergy or very specific requirement, let us know at booking so we can plan ahead.

Booking & Tour Conditions

Payment

A 30% deposit is required to secure your dates. The remaining balance is due 30 days before departure. We accept bank transfer, PayPal, and major credit cards. All prices are quoted per person based on double occupancy.

Cancellation

More than 60 days before departure: Full refund minus a 10% processing fee.

30–59 days before departure: 50% refund.

15–29 days before departure: 25% refund.

Less than 15 days: No refund.

Changes

We understand plans shift. Changes made more than 30 days before departure are free of charge, subject to availability. Changes made later may incur a small rebooking fee depending on the nature of the change.

Insurance

Travel insurance is not included in the tour price. We strongly recommend a policy that covers trip cancellation, medical evacuation, and lost luggage — especially given the remote nature of parts of this itinerary.

Health & Vaccinations

Check with your doctor before travel. Morocco does not currently require vaccinations for entry, but some doctors recommend Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and a tetanus booster. Bring any personal medications in their original packaging.

Itinerary Changes

In rare cases — severe weather, road closures, or local events — we may need to adjust the route or swap one accommodation for another of equal or better quality. We will always communicate any changes as early as possible.

Morocco with Mohamed was magical. Our best two weeks of May 2023 were adventure-filled with stunning architecture, gorgeous views of dessert, mountains, and oases. The history of this majestic country comes to life with Mohamed’s deep knowledge and passionate telling.
